Course Curriculum

First Year: Building the Basics

Students start with fundamental subjects like Tamil Literature Basics, Tamil Grammar, and Modern Tamil Prose & Poetry, which introduce them to key literary works and language rules. The curriculum also includes History of Tamil Nadu & Culture, providing insights into Tamil heritage and language evolution. Additionally, an English language paper enhances communication skills.

This year covers Medieval Tamil Literature (such as Bhakti period works like Thevaram), Advanced Tamil Grammar, and Journalism & Creative Writing in Tamil, helping students develop writing skills for media. Environmental Studies is also part of the syllabus, along with another language or communication paper. This phase focuses on practical applications, teaching students how to write stories, articles, and news pieces in Tamil.

The final year introduces advanced topics like Sangam Literature, Literary Criticism & Theory, and Tamil Folklore & Culture, helping students analyze texts and explore Tamil traditions. Many programs also require a Project or Dissertation, allowing students to research and write on a chosen topic under faculty guidance.

Throughout the course, students engage in essay writing, debates, presentations, and creative projects, ensuring an interactive and enriching learning experience. By the end of the program, graduates are well-prepared for careers in teaching, media, writing, and research.

Why TAKSHASHILA?

Language Fluency

At Takshashila University, the B.A. Tamil program is more than just academics—it helps you grow in every way. You’ll become fluent in Tamil, gaining the confidence to read, write, and speak the language effectively. This also improves your overall communication and even your English, thanks to critical thinking and writing practice.

You’ll gain a strong sense of Tamil culture and heritage, participating in cultural events, festivals, and literature-focused activities. The course sharpens your thinking by encouraging discussions, debates, and personal interpretation of texts. You’ll also learn how to do research—finding, organizing, and presenting information clearly—helping you prepare for higher studies or any job where learning matters.

Most importantly, you’ll grow as a person. Through group projects, seminars, and presentations, you’ll build confidence, leadership skills, and creativity. The supportive campus environment makes it easy to connect with mentors and peers, helping you succeed both academically and personally.

To apply, you must have passed 12th grade (any stream) from a recognized board. While it’s helpful to have studied Tamil in school, it’s not compulsory—basic reading and writing skills are enough to get started. The course begins with fundamentals and helps you improve as you go.

No entrance exam is required. Admission is generally based on your 12th marks and an optional interview. If you have awards in Tamil-related activities, they’re a plus. Students from other states or countries with a basic interest in Tamil are also welcome.

It’s okay if you haven’t studied Tamil deeply in school. The main requirement is that you have passed 12th grade. Of course, having some background in Tamil (like you had it as a subject or you can read/write basics) will make the start easier.

There are many career opportunities for B.A. Tamil graduates! You could become a teacher or lecturer (after further studies) to teach Tamil in schools/colleges. Absolutely! After your B.A.Tamil, you can go for M.A. in Tamil (Master of Arts in Tamil) to deepen your knowledge.
