Eye-Screening-Camp

In today’s digitally connected world, the strain on our eyes, particularly among school-age children, has never been higher. From hours spent on screens to intense academic demands, promoting and preserving good vision is a critical public health challenge. In response to this need, the School of Allied Health Science at Takshashila University recently conducted a comprehensive Eye Screening Camp at the Solar Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Tindivanam on November 28, 2025.

This outreach activity was a powerful, tangible statement of the University’s deep-rooted commitment to community welfare. It went beyond a simple check-up to proactively reinforce the vital importance of early detection and prevention of vision-related conditions among both students and staff.

Beyond the Screen: Identifying Needs and Educating the Next Generation

The structure of the eye camp was meticulously designed to ensure maximum benefit. The team’s primary objectives were to:

  • Provide free and accessible eye screening services.
  • Accurately identify refractive errors and common eye conditions.
  • Educate students on essential eye hygiene and preventive care.
  • Offer tailored advice and recommendations for any necessary further ophthalmic follow-up.

The challenges of digital eye strain, myopia (nearsightedness), and hyperopia (farsightedness) are increasingly prevalent among students. The camp directly addressed this by ensuring that all participants underwent an initial vision assessment conducted by highly trained professionals. Critically, this was coupled with education. Students were taught crucial eye care practices, including strategies for reducing screen time and the importance of maintaining proper lighting while reading or studying. These practical, lifelong habits are key to supporting overall well-being and good vision.

The thorough, specialised assessment provided to the 106 participants demonstrates why specialised vision care is crucial for public health initiatives, providing critical diagnoses and interventions that go beyond general screening.

A staggering 106 individuals benefited directly from the screening, including a diverse group of students from various grade levels and members of the dedicated school staff. The breakdown of participants highlighted the wide reach of the camp:

  • Students from 6th to 9th Grade: 60
  • 10th Grade Students: 12
  • 11th Grade Students: 13
  • 12th Grade Students: 13
  • Staff Members: 8

By reaching a significant cross-section of the school population, particularly the younger students, the camp took a critical step towards fostering better eye health habits early on. The enthusiastic participation of the students was a testament to the power of accessible, localised healthcare outreach.

Takshashila University, established 2022, has consistently stood as a beacon of academic excellence and community engagement. The Ripple Effect: Impact and Community Gratitude

The impact of the Eye Screening Camp resonated throughout the Solar Matriculation Higher Secondary School community. The initiative received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the students, staff, and school authorities. Participants expressed genuine gratitude for the opportunity to receive a professional eye check-up conveniently on school premises.

The educational aspect was particularly vital. By educating children about common eye problems such as myopia, hyperopia, and digital eye strain—conditions increasingly seen among school-age students—the camp equipped them and their families with the knowledge to maintain long-term vision health. For those students where potential vision issues were identified, the team provided clear advice to undergo a detailed ophthalmic evaluation, ensuring that any minor issue can be addressed before it develops into a major obstacle to a child’s learning and quality of life.

The successful organisation and implementation of this event perfectly illustrate the specialised training provided within our School. The dedication of our students in carrying out detailed assessments in a real-world setting shows that these hands-on experiences are invaluable components of our B.Sc. Optometry Technology curriculum produces professionals ready to make an immediate impact.

The School authorities extended their heartfelt thanks to Takshashila University for providing the necessary expertise and comprehensive support that made the camp a resounding success. The Eye Screening Camp conducted by the School of Allied Health Science proved to be a significant and highly effective step toward promoting preventive care and fostering lifelong habits that support good vision and overall well-being. Takshashila University continues to lead by example, demonstrating that a commitment to health literacy is integral to building a brighter future. Check out more events on this page.
