Takshashila University conducted the Health Assessment Module – Hands-on Training on 11th August 2026, at Takshashila Medical College, for the Nursing students to strengthen practical learning & understanding of comprehensive health assessment. A total of 96 students participated in the programme, which provided supervised, system-wise training across different body systems, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge, understand patient health status, and identify expected findings in a clinical setting and identify expected findings during health assessment

Objectives of the Hands-on Training Programme:

The Health Assessment Hands-on Training aimed to enable students to perform comprehensive health assessments in a supervised clinical setting and identify expected findings during assessment. It focused on strengthening their practical understanding of different body systems, developing clinical observation and assessment skills, and providing hands-on exposure to systematic health assessment techniques.

Hands-on Training Across Different Systems:

Hands-on Training Across Different Systems:

The training was structured system-wise, with students moving through focused sessions to observe, practice, and refine assessment skills under expert supervision. Each session paired brief theory with extensive hands-on practice.

Introduction to Health Assessment:

Introduction to Health Assessment:
Introduction to Health Assessment:

Dr. Vaishnavi D, Associate Professor, School of Nursing, Takshashila University, commenced the session with the foundational principles of health assessment, introducing the systematic approach inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation, used across all body systems. She emphasized patient history gathering and observation as essential first steps that guide the physical examination, setting the stage for the system-specific sessions that followed.

Integumentary System Assessment:

Dr. Gunalan, Senior Resident, Dermatology, TMCH, covered assessment of skin color, texture, turgor, and temperature, and how these reflect hydration and circulatory status. Students practiced identifying normal variations across age groups and describing findings using standardized terminology.

Respiratory System and Cardiovascular Assessment:

Respiratory System and Cardiovascular Assessment:

Dr. Yuvaraj, Senior Resident, Respiratory Medicine, TMCH, guided students through chest landmark identification and correct stethoscope placement for auscultating breath and heart sounds. Practice covered identifying normal respiratory patterns versus adventitious sounds along with cardiovascular checks including heart sounds, peripheral pulses, and capillary refill.
Dr. Madhan Raj, Senior Resident, ENT, TMCH, led students through visualizing the ear canal and tympanic membrane using otoscopes, identifying landmarks like the light reflex. The session also covered nasal cavity inspection and oropharyngeal examination of the tonsils, uvula, and pharyngeal wall, with close supervision on instrument handling and technique.

Gastrointestinal Assessment:

Gastrointestinal Assessment:

Dr. Manimuthu, Senior Resident, Department of Surgery, TMCH, demonstrated the correct examination sequence inspection, auscultation, percussion, palpation, to avoid disturbing bowel sounds prematurely. Students practiced quadrant-wise assessment, auscultating bowel sounds, percussing for tympany/dullness, and palpating for tenderness or masses, with practical insights drawn from surgical experience.

Learning Outcomes from Hands-on Practice:

Learning Outcomes from Hands-on Practice:

All 96 Nursing students engaged directly in the system-wise sessions, moving beyond theoretical understanding to apply assessment techniques under close supervision. This hands-on exposure strengthened their ability to perform comprehensive, systematic assessments and recognize expected clinical findings across different body systems.
Through repeated supervised practice, students also built greater confidence in clinical observation and interpretation, translating classroom concepts into real assessment skills. Beyond technique, the training supported the development of patient assessment and professional communication, competencies essential to accurate, patient-centered nursing care

Specialized Clinical Training for Nursing Students:

The programme benefited from the expertise of healthcare professionals from diverse specialties, giving students focused insight into each area of assessment and broader exposure to real clinical practice. This multidisciplinary interaction enriched their learning and reflects Takshashila University’s broader emphasis on experiential, skill-oriented nursing education, preparing students to apply their knowledge confidently in professional healthcare settings.

Conclusion:

The Health Assessment Module – Hands-on Training provided nursing students with comprehensive, system-wise practical exposure under the guidance of experienced healthcare professionals. Through expert-led sessions and supervised hands-on practice, students strengthened their health assessment techniques, clinical observation, and understanding of expected findings. The programme also reinforced the importance of holistic nursing education by promoting health awareness and responsible lifestyle choices through the Anti-Drug Awareness Pledge activity. The programme served as a valuable experiential learning opportunity, contributing to the development of confident and clinically competent nursing professionals.
